A resident of Guilford County, NC (Snider 36), James Smiley Gillaspie joined the Dialectic Society in 1798 but evidently did not graduate. He married Fanny Henderson, the niece of University steward Pleasant Henderson. After serving as principal of the University from 1797 to 1799, he became a Presbyterian minister in Kentucky (Vickers 27).
